9 Significant Steps to Remove Stains from Granite Worktops


Granite worktops are considered to be one of the most preferred by most homeowners. Times have changed and it is no longer just the aged who want granite worktops for their kitchens. But in order to adorn your home with this exquisite yet cheap granite worktops you have to take care of it.
The first and the most important thing to consider, in this case, is to understand that granite is not completely stain-resistant. To avoid that, you have to be careful and undertake certain measures. But fret not. Here are some steps to remove tough stains from granite.

Types of Stains

Stains can be of various types. Here we are mainly talking about removing organic stains like that of coffee, gravy, soda, tea and inorganic ones like that of dirt, ink and dyes. For these, you mainly require Hydrogen Peroxide with the exception of ink stains for which you need alcohol.

Then there are all types of oil stains for which you need pure acetone. The biological stains like mildew and mold require bleach to be removed while the metal ones like that of rust and copper call for iron-out to be done away with.

Prior to beginning the removal process, it is advisable to test a small area for ensuring that there is no adverse effect.

Process of Removal
  • Start by mixing the poultice (i.e. hydrogen peroxide with talc powder). You should be able to create a thick paste with the consistency of that of putty.
  • Now smear the mix over the area by keeping it just on the stain. The layer of the stain must be .25% of an inch.
  • Use a plastic wrap to cover the area and tape down the edges. Leave it like that for about 1 full day for the blend to set in.
  • After 24 hours, remove just the plastic wrap leaving the poultice on the place.
  • Permit this to be there on the stain till it is completely dry. This time period can range between a couple of hours to a couple of days.
  • When the paste is completely dry, then use a plastic scraper to do away with the paste.
  • Wipe away the rest of the paste with a clean cloth.
  • Use another clean cloth and clean the area dry.
  • If the stain still persists then you have to repeat the same process from 3-6 times. This is especially true for the stubborn oil stains. This way each time a bit of stain will be removed.
